English-Chapter One Questions

So far in the book little chinese seamstress, I have read up to chapter two. I do not know how I feel about the book when it comes to wether I like it or not. When I read that that anything western has been band from china i wondered why.  Because i thought Mao was trying to get rid of tradition. banning western idea's seems like Mao would be contradicting himself.
please comment and let me know what you think...

I think Mao said he wanted to get rid of all traditions so he could make up his own. I think banning all things Western helped him to do this--to have no other thoughts besides the revolutionary theories he wanted everyone to believe in.
